Snake may be resisting the urge to walk up to everyone and ask them exactly what they are, but someone else among the guests isn't fairing quite so well. Or the guests aren't, because of it. As someone who uses intrusive thoughts like a to-do list, he doesn't really make for the best sort of guest at a nice party like this. Even though it's not like he's making a scene or anything, he's still rather disruptive on a smaller scale. Getting in the middle of people's conversations, asking them directly what they are because he can't recognize their smell. He's taken at least one person's drink so he could fish out the cherry before handing it back.
Eventually his nosiness leads him to someone who doesn't seem to belong in a place where they shouldn't be. He learned quickly that humans have their designated spots, or serving jobs where they're allowed to mingle, but not without a tray in hand (he stopped at least one of the humans to explain how to be a better waiter. 'This is what I would do...') and this one isn't filling either role. River not so subtly leans in to sniff the air around Snake, and then tips his head to the side curiously. "What are you? You smell kinda human..."
before or after snake's been with vena. you can decide~
